Falcondo: Con una mina de recursos para la comunidad

Ioannis Moutafis no busca tener una ‘mina’ de dine­ro. Prefiere excavar hasta extraer oportunidades de desarrollo para las comu­nidades donde la Falconbridge Dominicana (Falcondo) realiza sus operaciones.

Una producción y exportación que no se ha detenido aun con la crisis sanitaria que vive el mundo, una minería selectiva, más de dos mil colaboradores, y la inclusión de la comunidad a través de la ca­pacitación para que sea parte del proceso de producción, son parte de los logros que ha obtenido la institución que preside Moutafis.

Desde el año 2015 se han con­centrado en realizar una activi­dad comercial que impacte posi­tivamente los alrededores de la mina. Con un 80% de áreas que ellos protegen, han logrado reavi­var una zona que cinco años atrás estaba en franco deterioro.

Su proyecto es convertir a la Loma Miranda en una reserva natural, bajo la tutela de un pa­tronato que cuidará cada área. Esto lo harían junto al Ministerio  de Medio Ambiente y al Ministe­rio de Energía y Mina. Trabajan y trabajarán para demostrar que su impacto será positivo, pues con sus cuidados se construirán carre­teras, se cuidará para evitar la tala de árboles, incendios forestales, tala ilegal; más los proyectos co­munitarios con los residentes de los distintos pueblitos circundan­tes, entre otros.

Eso lo dice Moutafis, quien acaba de firmar un convenio con la Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Haina, S.A. (EGE Haina), de compra y venta de energía foltovoltaica para ser empleada en las operaciones mineras de la compañía.

El contrato establece que EGE Haina suministrará a Falcondo, en calidad de usuario no regu­lado del Sistema Eléctrico Na­cional Interconectado (SENI), parte de la energía que esta em­presa requiere para su produc­ción. Con esto demuestra la em­presa minera que busca todas las formas de evitar dañar el medio ambiente.

Moutafis explica que la energía provendrá de la producción del Parque Solar Girasol, que EGE Hai­na construirá durante los próximos meses en el municipio Yaguate, provincia San Cristóbal, y que ten­drá una capacidad de 120 MW. "Es­te convenio muestra que la minería puede operar de manera amigable con el medioambiente", puntualiza el ejecutivo.

En la pandemia

Que solo el 1.5 por ciento de sus empleados adquirió el virus los llena de satisfacción porque res­ponde a las exitosas medidas de bioseguridad que implementaron en la mina. Establecer varios tur­nos, duplicar el número de trans­porte y adecuar la empresa para que los empleados estuvieran dis­tanciamiento físico en las distin­tas áreas y el comedor, ha sido la clave perfecta para lograr la baja en los casos.

Moutafis, presidente y gerente general de Falcondo, asegura que no tuvieron que suspender nin­gún empleado.

A principio de la pandemia el ferroníquel tuvo una baja en los mercados mundiales, pero a partir de junio volvieron a subir las exportaciones a China, Ja­pón, Europa, Estados Unidos, Korea e India que son los países que demandan más consumo.

Compromiso asumido

Ambos abrieron sus portafolios para explicar que en el año 2015 la minera Falcondo llega a Mon­señor Nouel y encuentran una mina con 120 empleados. Hoy, cinco años después ya son 2,000, las personas que logran su susten­to en la compañía.

Para ello, redujeron los requi­sitos en el perfil de los aspiran­tes comunitarios y, por ende, decidieron capacitarlos para el manejo de los equipos más so­fisticados y así insertarlo total­mente en la producción de for­ma igualitaria.

Esta fue una de las prime­ras medidas a ejecutar, pues su principal prioridad es ayudar a los comunitarios y hacerlos par­tícipes de todos los proyectos que realizan, ya sea de medio­ambiente, responsabilidad so­cial o de innovación.

"También cabe destacar que en la loma Manaclita, en donde se está sacando ferroníquel, solo se está usando el 11 por ciento, y trabajando con excavaciones pe­queñas que, inmediatamente ter­minamos lo reforestamos, es de­cir, que en 20 años que culmina el tiempo útil de esa zona, tendre­mos toda el área reforestada", di­jo Nicolás Vargas, gerente finan­ciero de Falcondo.

Innovación

Explican que su proceso de exca­vación se rige por los estándares internacionales con el uso de las nuevas tecnologías de minería se­lectiva que se hace con escáner focalizado solamente en el área de extracción.

"Estamos apostando a la utiliza­ción de esos avances que nos per­miten ir de manera directa a lo que buscamos, sin afectar ni com­prometer otras áreas. Lo nuestro es proteger los recursos naturales, es crear fuente de trabajo y, en fin, apoyarnos en todo lo que beneficie a las comunidades de los alrededo­res de la mina". Esto lo enfatiza Ni­colás Vargas, director de Finanzas de la entidad.

Desde que se establecieron, hace cinco años, como una mi­na para extraer ferroníquel, lo  hicieron con el compromiso de no utilizar químicos y tener un consumo mínimo de agua.

El mineral que se extrae pro­viene de suelos o rocas blandas básicas, razón por la cual, al fi­nal de su proceso, no produce aguas ácidas residuales. Con­secuentemente todas las aguas que circulan en la mina son aguas de PH neutro o básico, asegura.

La preservación de los bosques naturales, protegiéndolos contra incendios, tala ilegal e invasión; recuperación de áreas interveni­das mediante la rehabilitación y la reforestación; garantía de can­tidad y calidad de aguas a través de un robusto sistema en su ma­nejo, son el aval para continuar con su proyecto de extraer ferro­níquel en la parte que le corres­ponde de loma Miranda, que es un 11%. Su propuesta se haría a lo largo de unos 20 años, bajo los mismos estándares que lo están haciendo ahora.

Falcondo, como una empresa históricamen­te responsable y cons­ciente de que la falta de agua potable tiene gra­ves consecuencias en la salud de las comunida­des y en la seguridad ali­mentaria, implementó la construcción de acue­ductos comunitarios en las comunidades que es­tán bajo la sombrilla de sus operaciones. Gracias a tales iniciativas las co­munidades de La Mini­ta, Bonaito, El Verde, Pe­ñaló, Hato Viejo y Ran­cho Nuevo disfrutan en la actualidad de una dis­ponibilidad de agua de consumo para los que­haceres del hogar y la­bores agrícolas.

Falcondo: with a mine of resources for the community

A production and export that has not stopped even with the health crisis that the world is experiencing, selective mining, more than two thousand employees, and the inclusion of the community through training so that they can be part of the production process, are part of the achievements of the institution chaired by Moutafis.

Since 2015 they have focused on carrying out a commercial activity that positively impacts the surroundings of the mine. With 80% of the areas that they protect, they have managed to revive an area that five years ago was in frank deterioration.

His project is to turn Loma Miranda into a natural reserve, under the tutelage of a patronage that will take care of each area. They would do this together with the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Energy and Mines. They work and will work to show that their impact will be positive, because with their care, roads will be built, care will be taken to avoid the felling of trees, forest fires, illegal logging; plus community projects with residents of the different surrounding towns, among others.

That is said by Moutafis, who has just signed an agreement with Empresa Generadora de Electricidad Haina, S.A. (EGE Haina), for the purchase and sale of foltovoltaic energy to be used in the company's mining operations.

The contract establishes that EGE Haina will supply Falcondo, as an unregulated user of the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI), part of the energy that this company requires for its production. This shows that the mining company seeks all ways to avoid damaging the environment.

Moutafis explains that the energy will come from the production of the Girasol Solar Park, which EGE Haina will build in the coming months in the Yaguate municipality, San Cristóbal province, and which will have a capacity of 120 MW. "This agreement shows that mining can operate in an environmentally friendly way," says the executive.

In the pandemic

That only 1.5 percent of its employees had the virus fills them with satisfaction because it responds to the successful biosecurity measures they implemented at the mine. Commitment assumed

Both opened their portfolios to explain that in 2015 the Falcondo mining company arrived in Monseñor Nouel and found a mine with 120 employees. Today, five years later, there are already 2,000 people who make a living in the company.

To do this, they reduced the requirements in the profile of community applicants and, therefore, decided to train them to handle the most sophisticated equipment and thus fully insert it into production on an equal footing.

This was one of the first steps to implement, as their main priority is to help community and involve them in all projects undertaken, whether environmental, social responsibility or innovation .

"It is also noteworthy that in the Manaclita hill, where ferronickel is being extracted, only 11 percent is being used, and working with small excavations that, we immediately finish, we reforest it, that is, that in 20 years when the mine ends, the entire area will be reforested, "said Nicolás Vargas, Falcondo's financial manager.

Innovation

They explain that their excavation process is governed by international standards with the use of new selective mining technologies that are done with a scanner focused only on the extraction area.

"We are betting on the use of these advances that allow us to go directly to what we are looking for, without affecting or compromising other areas. Ours is to protect natural resources, to create a source of work and, finally, to support ourselves in everything that benefits the communities around the mine ". This is emphasized by Nicolás Vargas, director of Finance of the entity.

Since they were established five years ago as a mine to extract ferronickel, they have done so with the commitment of not using chemicals and having minimal water consumption.

The mineral that is extracted comes from soils or basic soft rocks, which is why, at the end of its process, it does not produce acid waste water. Consequently, all the waters that circulate in the mine are waters of neutral or basic PH, he assures.

The preservation of natural forests, protecting them against fires, illegal logging and invasion; recovery of intervened areas through rehabilitation and reforestation; guarantee of quantity and quality of water through a robust system in its management, they are the guarantee to continue with its project of extracting ferronickel in its part of the Miranda hill, which is 11%. Their proposal would be made over about 20 years, under the same standards that they are doing now.

Falcondo, as a historically responsible company and aware that the lack of drinking water has serious consequences on the health of the communities and on food security, implemented the construction of community aqueducts in the communities that are under the umbrella of its operations. Thanks to these initiatives, the communities of La Minita, Bonaito, El Verde, Peñaló, Hato Viejo and Rancho Nuevo currently enjoy an availability of drinking water for household chores and agricultural work.
